Save money on vehicle registration

Vehicle registration is set to get cheaper from 1 July, 2015.

The ACC levy will drop on average by 41 per cent.

Reductions are based on risk which includes the ability of a vehicle to protect its occupants and other road users from serious injury in a crash. Newer vehicles will benefit most . The changes will more than halve the average levy on a petrol-driven car from $198.65 a year to as low as $68.46 for many popular models.

It isn’t good news if you are a motorcyclist. ACC has ruled out any changes to levies on mopeds or motorcycles.

The levy on petrol is also timed to fall by around 2 cents a litre (or 20 per cent) to 7.9 cents a litre.

So if you are due to relicense your vehicle in the month of June, opt for a shorter time frame. This will minimise the amount of time your car is licensed at the higher rate. Renewals for less than three months must be done in person at an agent of the New Zealand Transport agency rather than online.

Larger Fleets

If you have more than five vehicles in your fleet you may be able to qualify for ACC’s Fleet Saver. Savings extend from 10 to 40 percent off the usual ACC rates. You will need to be able to demonstrate that you have met the ACC’s requirement for safe management practices.
